Day Sixteen - Suns and Khepers

Block 16 feat. Jon Lucien - Morning Sun
pressed in 2001

One folds to see. These paper shapes are eyes.

What to do for ears? Or trunks?

Dung beetles roll balls of fecal matter and move them in straight lines away from larger dung piles. The dung beetle lives off the nourishment contained in these rolled balls of fecal matter. In Kafka's Metamorphosis, a cleaning lady affectionally calls post-transformation Gregor an 'Alter Mistkäfer' or 'old dung beetle.'

In ancient Egyptian mythology, the dung beetle is associated with the sun god Khepri who moves the sun across the sky. The god Khepri or Kepher (dung beetle or scarab, hieroglyphically) was believed to push the sun 'into being' from the underworld and thus is associated with the dawning sun. The name Kheper means 'come into being' and with his kepher scarab head he pushes the sun across the sky and safely through the underworld at night so that day can shine anew with morning sun.
